Education

Public education in Palmetto is governed by the Manatee County School District. Within Palmetto there are four high schools (Palmetto High School, magnet school Manatee School for the Arts, and two disciplinary schools, in addition to new high schools currently being constructed), two middle schools and five elementary schools. Lincoln and Buffalo Creek middle schools are the primary feeders to the high schools. Each school has a large student population with Lincoln’s enrollment of over 1,100 students ranking as one of the highest in Manatee County. Elementary schools are located in many fine neighborhoods throughout Palmetto. Schools include Virgil Mills Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, Palm View Elementary and Blackburn Elementary. The fifth, James Tillman Elementary, is a magnet school. For those seeking to pursue an education beyond high school, there are nine universities or colleges located within 45-miles of Palmetto. The nearest is Manatee Community College in the city of Bradenton. The largest university in the area, University of South Florida, is located about 40 miles away in Tampa, with a branch located on the Manatee and Sarasota County border offering limited classes.

Economy and Job Market

Palmetto remains an attractive city for businesses to operate. The city continues to evolve into a thriving business center filled with opportunity. There are approximately three million Floridians residing within a 50-mile radius of Palmetto which has served to create one of the state’s most stable and viable economies. Further, the workforce continues to grow as more and more jobs become available throughout the region. Palmetto is located in one of Southwest Florida’s largest commercial centers. Palmetto is considered the hub of Manatee County’s thriving agriculture industry and is also situated near the ever-busy Port Manatee. Although Palmetto ranks eighth in the state in agricultural income, agriculture is not the only industry in which to find gainful employment. From retail stores and restaurants to large corporations, universities, medical hospitals and government services, employment opportunities abound in this prospering economy.

Attractions and Points of Interest

Emerson Point Preserve is a popular destination for nature lovers. Located on Snead Island in Palmetto, the preserve is filled with winding trails and wildlife and has a breathtaking lookout with vistas of Anna Maria Island, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the St. Petersburg skyline. Additional points of interest include The Manatee Agricultural Center, Palmetto Plaza, and the Palmetto Village Shopping Center. For those who enjoy golf, there are several courses throughout the area from the private clubs of River Wilderness and Terra Ceia Bay Club, to the public courses of Imperial Lakes and Buffalo Creek. For baseball fans, the city of Bradenton is less than 20 minutes away and is home to several spring training facilities that come alive during the months of February, March and April each year as major league teams hold their training camps and preseason games in the area. Throughout the spring and summer, single, double and triple A baseball teams play games weekly. The cost to attend these games are significantly less than major league games and offer a much more intimate experience for fans. Throughout the region is a variety of museums, theatres, concert halls and performance centers that feature entertainment of all types. Additionally, the region is well-known for its water sports and activities ranging from surfing, boating and fishing.

Parks and Recreations

The Palmetto Parks Department is comprised of 10 park areas located throughout the city. Parks include Palmetto Historical Park, Sutton Park, Lamb Park, Riverside Park East and West, 17th Street Park, Taylor Park, Hydrant Park and the Palmetto Estuary. Each park offers a variety of amenities including sand playgrounds, sports fields and indigenous plant life. The Parks Department also manages many of the local special events such as the Manatee County Fair, the 4th of July Celebration, the Tomato and Founder’s Day Festival and the Celebration of Lights that takes place in early December each year. These social events are filled with live entertainment from local and national acts, food and craft vendors and carnival-like games for people of all ages. The Manatee County Fair is the biggest event held in Palmetto. A ten-day long event that features carnival rides, a variety of food vendors, youth attractions, arts and crafts booths, exhibits, a livestock area, and live shows, the fair has been an annual event since 1916. Residents and kids of all ages look forward to this fair every January. The fairgrounds are also open year round for public events, such as rodeos, company events, concerts and educational fairs.
